"O people of the world! Build ye houses of worship throughout the lands in the name of Him Who is the Lord of all religions. Make them as perfect as is possible in the world of being…"

— Bahá’u’lláh (The Kitáb-i-Aqdas, p. 29)

Temple Endowment Fund

The Universal House of Justice wrote in 1979 that:

National Spiritual Assemblies should set aside sums annually in their budgets for the maintenance of national properties so that when a repair becomes necessary the funds will be available without creating a sudden crisis for the national fund. . . . Well maintained and regularly used properties will not only be a means of fostering Bahá’í community life, but will add to the prestige and dignity of the Faith in the eyes of the non-Bahá’í public.

It is our responsibility to ensure that the Mother Temple of the West is cared for wisely and without interruption. The first step is to create an endowment. The concept is simple—an amount of money is set aside and invested in order to produce a steady flow of interest income; that income is used to pay current expenses, leaving the invested sum, or “corpus,” of the endowment untouched. It will take years to build an endowment capable of fully supporting our annual property maintenance expenses. Therefore, we must begin the process of building a strong foundation for this endowment immediately. With the National Spiritual Assembly’s allocation of $4.5 million, a seed for a Temple endowment has been established.  As the endowment grows in size, it will be able to support new maintenance of the Temple and secure its future.
