A crane lifts one of the new trees into place
Four 50-year-old diseased crabapple trees were replaced at the outer edge of the garden just east of the main entrance walkway. Each new tree, weighing around 7,000 pounds including an established root ball, was lifted with a crane and placed in a 10-foot wide hole.

The last structural concrete has been poured for the reflecting pool leading to the Temple from the corner of Linden and Sheridan. Concrete Studio w concrete mixer has been installed to allow continuous production of precast monumental stairs weighing up to a ton each, at the same time as smaller pieces are being produced on a separate production line. A new mold was fabircated for one of the 18 levels of monumental stair steps. Molds used in the 1989 repair of steps near the main entrance have been reconditioned to be used again for most of the current work. 2,750 pieces of epoxy-coated welded-wire steel reinforcing were received for the monumental steps.

Garden Bench Wall Pieces
The Temple Concrete Studio continues work at a very busy pace thru the winter months so that finished architectural components will be ready for installation in the upcoming construction season. The craftsmen are casting garden bench-wall components, reflecting pool coping stones and garden crescent steps. In addition, the Studio crew is rearranging the factory in order to begin producing one thousand large monumental stairs and six thousand pavers that will encircle the House of Worship.

The pavers and the ornamental concrete components in the gardens weigh less than 400 pounds.  The heaviest monumental step is 1,900 pounds. That weight difference requires that the Temple Concrete Studio set up two production lines. One line is equipped with concrete mixers, shaker tables, conveyors and overhead cranes to handle smaller concrete pieces such as the garden components and the pavers. A second production line provides capacity for monumental steps and large wall cladding components.

The Chicago cold hasn’t slowed the pace of the work at the Temple.  The cement is now being poured for the terrace deck above the service entrance to the House of Worship.

The area below the terrace deck is enclosed to heat the underside where the pouring takes place.  After the pouring of the cement is done  insulated blankets are placed above the wet cement to keep the heat inside assuring  the correct conditions under which the curing of the cement can occur.
